Autism and ADHD in Māori

Below are some Māori words, translated into English but don't exactly have a one-to-one matching of the word in English.

  • Takiwātanga (Autism): From 'tōku/tōna anō takiwā' - 'my/his/her own time and space
  • Aroreretini (ADHD): Attention goes to many things
  • Whaikaha (Disabled): To have strength, to have ability, otherly abled, enabled. A word created within the Māori disabled community.
  • Māuiui Hauora Hinengaro (Mental Health Challenges): Figurative - Māuiui i.e. 'out of balance'
