I frequently reflect back to my University studyies in Graphic Design.
It wasn't a typical University experience. I had four years of weekly studio time; practical lessons in meaning-making through imagery, typopgraphy, and visual language; historical contexts of the craft's evolution from the early days of modern advertising to the 90s.
One of the projects, in those early years, was to design a print magazine. The purpose? Learning typographic systems, layout composition, and procedural creativity.
My interest in a publication stems since then. At least design-wise.
Then the days of The Manual, 8 Faces, Offscreen, The Shape of Design, all these publications.
I've always wanted to do something like that.
But about what?
Substance; Structure; Style
Substance
The content; the meat; the why.Structure
The semantics; the naming; the what.Style
The cascade; the layers; the how.Coalition
The margins; the intersections; the who.Conference
The open; the internet; the where.
