Algorithmic Color

Applying Josef Albers' Color Studies to the Web; a visual essay idea

location Raleigh,  NC,  US

I surprise myself on how often I reflect on Josef Albers' Interaction of Colors, specifically the color studies.

I think of all the people trying to leave their countries, seeking safety.

About him:

  • He left Germany and the Bauhaus because Nazis.
  • Came over and such with his wife.
  • Did this, and also talk about the impact of interaction of color

  • map that to nc state university's college of design.

I was taught in the style of Black Mountain College.

I did some exploration work for Chris Murphy with the School of Design.

Trackway Color System

I started running with the idea and created this Trackway Color System, using color mixing to create accessible color palettes from combinations of color-mixing on the web. My coding skills to create it myself still aren't to that level, but if anyone wants to talk about it, would be happy to make it real.

Now, I'm coming back to Josef Albers, and how these things have come together.

Today, we went to the North Carolina Museum of Art and I saw some of the original color studies. That was one of the pieces that exctied me the most.

How can we scatter paint like that on the web?

Something I miss about designing physical artifacts are the limitless constraints. Our medium doesn't have the physicality of
